Despite the dangerous conditions and poor sanitation leaving him with health conditions, John Marrah mines with 13 others to support his family. John relies on the mine for everything, and is sustained by the food that the leaders give out to the miners. However, his wage is too low for him to get the treatment he needs for the illnesses that mining has left him with. There are no provisions in his mining operation for illness, so he has to keep going or he won’t be able to eat.
